ESOS is a mandatory program lead by the UK government established to assess an organisations energy usage.  Organisations that quality for an ESOS must carry out the assessment every 4 years, this assessment is an audit into the organisations energy usage and measures the following:

  1. The originations total energy consumptions for buildings, industrial processes and transport
  2. Identify areas within the origination responsible for significant energy consumption that account for at least 90% of your total energy consumption.
  3. Identify areas where cost-effective energy efficiency can be adopted into the organisation.

Do I need to do one?

The ESOS is currently only under taken by UK organisations that either:

  1. employs 250 or more people, or
  2. has an annual turnover in excess of 50 million euro (£38,937,777), and an annual balance sheet total in excess of 43 million euro (£33,486,489)
  3. an overseas company with a UK registered establishment which has 250 or more UK employees (paying income tax in the UK)

To add to this our organisation is part of a large corporate group that makes and you fall into any of the above then it is more than likely you will need to complete a ESOS and it is stated that the highest UK parent will be responsible and ensure the group as a whole is complies with ESOS.

Please note that if your organisation is fully covered by ISO 50001 then you may not need to complete an ESOS assessment.
